Although not the first sequel to Night of the Living Dead, (Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, and even Fulci's Zombie 2 beat it to theaters,) 'Return...' does cite, quote and make reference to the film, saying it was based on a true story, but they got it wrong. A completely different approach to the living dead is then applied and lots of 'firsts' are born here: runners, talking, and of course, "Brains!"
Even decapitation doesn't destroy these guys. They can only be stopped by total cremation.
Time wasn't always kind to this movie, but the once-dated, 80s clichés, clothes and music now seems more, "period" or retro. The cast is more caricature than character, and the acting, (or 'overacting' more accurately,) definitely borders on the zom-com.
Return of the Living Dead boasts some great SPFX, (for the time,) and lots of gore. And the dissolving cellar zombie is one of the most awesome examples of living dead EVER!!!

On the downside, the 80s pop/punk music score really robs the tension from some truly terrifying scenes.
Due to its originality, zombies, scares, and pacing, it landed a very respectable 3.625 on the ol' ZMR.
ScreamFactory TV has a trailer on YouTube for you, so set your WayBacks to 1985! RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD
